Utrecht is the fourth-largest city in the Netherlands, with a population of 316,000, and the capital of the Utrecht province. It was originally the largest city in the Netherlands, until it was overtaken by Amsterdam in the Dutch Golden Age. The city is a centre of culture and religion and the hub of the Dutch rail network.
The name is commonly pronounced "Yoo-trect" by English-speakers. The actual Dutch pronunciation involves sounds which don't exist in English.
Shown here is the built-up area of Utrecht together with neighbouring places Maarssen, Maarsseveen, Nieuwegein and IJsselstein (to be distinguished from their municipal districts).
